<p>Weather happens.</p>
<p>Rain on the wedding day is considered good luck for a marriage, but it sometimes makes a situation slippery.&nbsp; What do you do when you planned the last six months for a outdoor picnic-themed wedding and end up with a monsoon?&nbsp; </p>
<p>Be flexible.&nbsp; Laugh.&nbsp; Remember that you are supposed to be celebrating a joyful occasion.&nbsp; Of course, a Plan B is always smart.</p>

<p>Last week, we presented to AISD's "Ready For The Real World" event. &nbsp;We talked to high school students about the importance of first impressions and the appropriate way to dress for a job interview. &nbsp;</p>
<p>But enough with that! &nbsp;Spring time is finally in full bloom in Amarillo. &nbsp;After a few dreary cold spells we are enjoying the sunshine. &nbsp;The birds are chirp chirping away and (cue the cheesy music) &nbsp;LOVE is in the air. &nbsp;Ha ha.</p>
<p>This of course means weddings. &nbsp;They happen all year long, but there is&nbsp;</p>
<p>something about late spring that gets people in a frenzy to say "I do." &nbsp;So for the rest of this month and the early part of June, we will be talking about gowns and flowers and cakes and venues and pictures and something old, something new, something borrowed, something....okay you get the point.</p>

<p>As we mentioned before, style is all about attitude.&nbsp; StyleWise assistant and blogger, Shannon Holt, woke up this morning with her left eye feeling so irritated, she couldn't open it and had to visit the doctor. She should be better in a few days but this got her to thinking about eye patches.&nbsp; </p>
<p>They aren't just for pirates, you know.&nbsp; Some examples:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;<strong>The Runway Model Eye Patch</strong></p>

<p>Happy Friday everyone!&nbsp; We end this week with a poem by the great Maya Angelou.</p>
<p></p>
<h2>Phenomenal Woman</h2>
<p class="author">by  Maya  Angelou </p>
<span class="fullname_search"><br />
</span>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">But when I start to tell them,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">They think I’m telling lies.
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">I say,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">It’s in the reach of my arms,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">The span of my hips,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">The stride of my step,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">The curl of my lips.
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">I’m a woman
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">Phenomenally.
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">Phenomenal woman,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">That’s me.
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">I walk into a room
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">Just as cool as you please,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">And to a man,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">The fellows stand or
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">Fall down on their knees.
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">Then they swarm around me,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">A hive of honey bees.
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">I say,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">It’s the fire in my eyes,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">And the flash of my teeth,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">The swing in my waist,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">And the joy in my feet.
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">I’m a woman
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">Phenomenally.
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">Phenomenal woman,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">That’s me.
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">Men themselves have wondered
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">What they see in me.
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">They try so much
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">But they can’t touch
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">My inner mystery.
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">When I try to show them,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">They say they still can’t see.
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">I say,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">It’s in the arch of my back,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">The sun of my smile,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">The ride of my breasts,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">The grace of my style.
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">I’m a woman
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">Phenomenally.
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">Phenomenal woman,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">That’s me.
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">Now you understand
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">Just why my head’s not bowed.
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">I don’t shout or jump about
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">Or have to talk real loud.
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">When you see me passing,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">It ought to make you proud.
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">I say,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">It’s in the click of my heels,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">The bend of my hair,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">the palm of my hand,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">The need for my care.
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">’Cause I’m a woman
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">Phenomenally.
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">Phenomenal woman,
</div>
<div style="text-indent: -1em; padding-left: 1em;">
<p>That’s me.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Poetry month continues with a nostalgic piece by nationally acclaimed poet and four-time Pushcart Prize winner, Mark Irwin:</p>
<div style="padding-left: 14px; padding-top: 13px; text-align: left;"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-family: times new roman; font-size: 16px; color: #3c605b;">My Father's Hats <span style="color: #000000;">by Mark Irwin</span></span></div>
<div style="padding-left: 14px; padding-top: 20px; font-family: arial; font-size: 13px;">
Sunday mornings I would reach<br />
high into his dark closet while standing<br />
on a chair and tiptoeing reach<br />
higher, touching, sometimes fumbling<br />
the soft crowns and imagine<br />
I was in a forest, wind hymning<br />
through pines, where the musky scent<br />
of rain clinging to damp earth was<br />
his scent I loved, lingering on<br />
bands, leather, and on the inner silk<br />
crowns where I would smell his<br />
hair and almost think I was being<br />
held, or climbing a tree, touching<br />
the yellow fruit, leaves whose scent<br />
was that of clove in the godsome<br />
air, as now, thinking of his fabulous<br />
sleep, I stand on this canyon floor<br />
and watch light slowly close<br />

<p>We continue celebrating poetry month with a little piece written by a woman ahead of her time who knew the power and intrigue a pair of red shoes beholds.</p>
<p><strong>RED SLIPPERS</strong></p>
<p>by Amy Lowell </p>
<p><strong></strong></p>
<p><strong>Red slippers in a shop-window; and outside in the street, flaws of gray, windy sleet!<br />
<br />
<br />
Behind the polished glass the slippers hang in long threads of red, festooning from the ceiling like stalactites of blood, flooding the eyes of passers-by with dripping color, jamming their crimson reflections against the windows of cabs and tram-cars, screaming their claret and salmon into the teeth of the sleet, plopping their little round maroon lights upon the tops of umbrellas.<br />
<br />
<br />
The row of white, sparkling shop-fronts is gashed and bleeding, it bleeds red slippers. They spout under the electric light, fluid and fluctuating, a hot rain—and freeze again to red slippers, myriadly multiplied in the mirror side of the window. <br />
<br />
They balance upon arched insteps like springing bridges of crimson lacquer; they swing up over curved heels like whirling tanagers sucked in a wind-pocket; they flatten out, heelless, like July ponds, flared and burnished by red rockets. <br />
<br />
Snap, snap, they are cracker sparks of scarlet in the white, monotonous block of shops. <br />
<br />
They plunge the clangor of billions of vermilion trumpets into the crowd outside, and echo in faint rose over the pavement.<br />
<br />
<br />
People hurry by, for these are only shoes, and in a window farther down is a big lotus bud of cardboard, whose petals open every few minutes and reveal a wax doll, with staring bead eyes and flaxen hair, lolling awkwardly in its flower chair. <br />
<br />
One has often seen shoes, but whoever saw a cardboard lotus bud before?<br />
<br />
<br />
The flaws of gray, windy sleet beat on the shop-window where there are only red slippers.</strong></p>

<p>April is "Poetry Month" in literary circles, and today we give a nod to 1920's acclaimed poet and fashion-ista, Dorothy Parker.&nbsp; Parker was known for her quick wit and her appetite for life. Considered quite the scandal by many, this writer was no Emily Dickinson.&nbsp; She loved nothing more than a good party and her poetry, short stories, and articles (she wrote for both Vogue and Vanity Fair) reflect this.&nbsp; So here's to you, Ms. Parker:</p>

<p>Put those miniscule spectacles away. &nbsp;Bold glasses are back. &nbsp;For how long? &nbsp;Who knows. &nbsp;We are only certain retro eyewear is taking 2010 by storm. &nbsp;Of course, not everyone is going to look great donning a pair of Buddy Holly frames. &nbsp;And as cute as those horn-rimmed glasses look on the models, they could easily make others look like they are getting ready for a sock hop. &nbsp;We certainly don't want you getting mistaken for your great-aunt Mildred! &nbsp;So to make a little sense of things, we at StyleWise scoped out a few useful sites to help you pick a fabulous pair of eyeglasses. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<ul>
    <li>Keep your eyewear current. &nbsp;We wish the glasses your wore in 1996 could still be trendy, but that just isn't the case.</li>
</ul>
<br />
<ul>
    <li>Trying them on is key. Don't get swept away by magazine articles and advertisements.&nbsp;Think of your glasses like you would a great necklace.&nbsp;&nbsp;You don't want to be overwhelmed by your accessories.&nbsp;They should feel like an extension of your own self. &nbsp;</li>
</ul>
<br />
<ul>
    <li>If you wear glasses everyday, don't be afraid to have several pairs. &nbsp;You change your clothes. You should have the freedom to change your eyewear!</li>
</ul>
<br />
<ul>
    <li>Also: the mirror sometimes lies. Have a friend go with you and take a digital camera. A picture can help be a deal-breaker.</li>

<p>Zippers:&nbsp;</p>
<p>Generally, zippers that are the length of the hand mean that a jean is mid-rise. Zippers that are longer are high-rise; shorter, low-rise. Mid-rise is almost always going to be the most flattering fit. It cuts the tummy in half and gives a long, lean look.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The Yoke:&nbsp;</p>
<p>The yoke is the v-shaped panel in the back waist-band.  The larger the yoke, the small the butt appears.  It creates a curvy fit and helps the jeans sit close to the body.  A large yoke also means the waist will probably fit better.&nbsp;
</p>
<p>Pockets:&nbsp;</p>
<p>The larger the pockets, the smaller the butt.  Visa-versa.  Also:  pockets that are slanted (versus pockets that are straight across) are usually best.  They help accentuate the good curves.&nbsp;
</p>
<p>Legs:&nbsp;</p>
<p>If you are over 5’5”, do yourself a favor and buy a great bootleg. They are so flattering. Not so much for the shorties. Petite women should concentrate on a more straight leg style.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Just so You Know...
August, September, and January are often the best months to buy great jeans.
“Jeans” are what we garden in. “Denim” is what we wear outside the home. Sleek, dark denim jeans are a must! &nbsp;</p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://www.stylewiseimage.com/Websites/stylewiseimage/Images/br731723-00vliv01.jpg" /></p>
